Wentworth, Foxtel’s hit prison drama, wraps up its fourth season on Tuesday, but it has been confirmed that production on the fifth season will kick off in Melbourne next month.
Based on the long-running Prisoner (or Cell Block H to our British friends), Wentworth explores the world inside a women’s prison through the eyes of new inmate, Bea Smith (Danielle Cormack). Building off the audience of its cult progenitor, Wentworth‘s combination of unblinking social commentary and pulpy twists and turns have garnered it a fiercely loyal fanbase both at home and overseas.
As Foxtel Head of Drama Penny Win observed, “Wentworth has gone from strength to strength over the past four seasons. Not only is it an international television success story, now showing in 141 territories, it is a ratings blockbuster and fan favourite for Foxtel audiences. We are extremely proud of this long-running drama juggernaut. It was a very easy decision to commission a further season of this brilliantly constructed and crafted program from our production partner FremantleMedia. There is a lot in store both for the women behind bars and those on the outside.”
Wentworth Season Five will premiere in 2017 exclusively on Foxtel.
