Queer Screen have announced the first three titles screening at the upcoming Queer Screen Film Fest, their companion showcase to their annual Mardi Gras Film Festival.
Other People has taken the coveted opening night slot. Written and directed by Saturday Night Live and Broad City writer, Chris Kelly, the film sees Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad) as a gay son forced to return to the family home to care for his dying mother, played by Molly Shannon (Saturday Night Live). Mixing sardonic humour with the tragedy of cancer, this is sure to wring laughter and tears out of the audience in equal measure.
Korean director Lee Dong-ha’s Weekends has also been confirmed. A documentary focusing on G-Voice, South Korea’s first and only gay men’s choir, the film charts the (admittedly not very good) group’s preparations for a 1oth anniversary concert, in the face of the county’s ingrained prejudice against LGBTI people.
Finally, actor Clea DuVall steps behind the camera for The Intervention, which once again pairs her with her But I’m a Cheerleader co-star, Natasha Lyonne. The pair play a couple who are swept up in a “please get divorced” intervention for another couple, which results in all concerned being forced to examine their own relationships.
The full program is announced on August 4. The Queer Screen Film Fest runs from September 10 -25 at Event Cinemas, George St, Sydney. For tickets and info, head to Queer Screen.
