Let’s be real for a moment: Thor has kinda struggled on the big screen. the God of Thunder works well in the Avengers flicks where he gets to play off the other personalities in the team, but his solo outings have not hit the mythic heights they could and should. Hopefully all that will change now that ol’ mate Taika Waititi (Boy, Hunt for the Wilderpeople) is calling the shots.
And how! This looks amazing. Asgard has fallen to Hela (Cate Blanchett), godess of the underworld! Mjolnir is shattered! Thor gets a haircut (apparently important enough to actuall! show on screen)! And, of course, “He’s a friend! We know each other from work!”
There’s plenty more to unpack here – check out Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie and Jeff Goldblum’s Grandmaster – but this is shaping up to the be pretty fantastic.
