This year, the Academy has thrown in some curve balls but also some films that shouldn’t surprise anyone. From the Daniels’ Everything Everywhere All at Once to Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans already being touted as locks for nominations, it was some of the smaller films that made eyebrows rise.

Who would have predicted Ruben Östlund’s Triangle of Sadness getting into the big leagues? Then, of course, there is the campaigning for Andrea Riseborough in To Leslie that started out as a something that only other actors were talking about but it paid dividends.
