The Cannes Film Festival is not only about the Palme d’Or and glamorous red carpet events, it’s also a market where deals are done, which is where it has just been announced that a Shane Warne documentary is in the works.
“The word legend, like superstar, is much overused these days but in the case of Shane Warne it fits perfectly as he really is one of the greatest athletes to grace the sporting world. Eclipse Films are extremely excited to be part of telling Shane’s story,” said John Sachs from Eclipse Films, who are producing the film.
And according to the presser, this is what the film will cover:
‘Revealing what happened to transform a boy barely interested in the game of cricket into one of the greatest players the game has ever witnessed, SHANE will uncover the early rejection, how he discovered the art of spin bowling, the men who inspired him, how he took international cricket by storm, the psychological grip he had on opponents, the moments of euphoria and celebration and the records that tumbled. It will show how Shane Warne evolved from a shy young man obsessed by Aussie rules football into a charismatic global personality, chat show host, professional poker player, playboy, and star of his own musical.
‘Confronting the controversies in Shane Warne’s life and how they shaped him as a player, a team mate, a father, a man, SHANE will explore his relationship with his children and the bond they share. The film will also illustrate the depth of admiration and affection from every corner of the globe for its subject, focusing particularly on India where Shane Warne is adored, his five year spell with Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League further enhancing his god-like status in the cricket obsessed country.’
The documentary will be directed by Jon Carey (who has made a habit of making sport related docos that touch on the personal and the global – Forbidden Games: The Justin Fashanu Story, An Ordinary Hero: The Mike Hailwood Story) and promises to ‘feature never before seen personal archive footage, historic landmark moments from the cricketer’s extraordinary career and supported by exclusive interviews with Shane, his family, friends, colleagues, opponents and celebrities.’
