Censlus 2016 and Sonnigsburg Among the Last Shows to be Aired on C31

November 15, 2016
Satirical comedy and supernatural drama see out the free-to-air community TV service.

As you may or may not be aware, community television is ceasing free broadcast in Australia at the end of the year, at least on a free-to-air basis. Some manner of online model has been bandied about, but thus far the details are murky. Suffice it to say, community TV as we know it is a dead service walking.

But it’s not dead yet, and a couple of gems are arriving soon to put a bold punctuation mark on the end of community television’s long and illustrious sentence: satirical comedy Censlus 2016 and supernatural drama, Sonnigsburg.

As the title suggests, Censlus 2016 is a droll look at the recent census debacle, when the official website crashed, leaving countless Australians unable to do their civic duty. Written, directed and co-produced by community TV veteran Phillip McKechnie, Censlus 2016 looks at the chaos behind the scenes. Here’s a clip:

Sonnigsburg, however, is six part, hour long drama – the first hour long drama in the histroy of Australian community television, in fact. Developed over the past three years on a budget of $30,000 by independent executive producer Fiona Bulle, Sonnigsburg is the story of Savannah (Ann Truong) , a TV location scout who goes to visit her ex-girlfriend, Jade (Petra Elliott), in rural Mount Sunshine. While visiting, she hears stories of Sonnigsburg – a town out in the woods that no one has visited for decades. But as she researches the mysterious Sonnigsburg, she discovers Mount Sunshine is haunted by the ghosts of its past.

Censlus 2016 will air on both Channel 31 Melbourne and 31 Digital Brisbane on Friday evening 25th November at 7.00pm; Channel 44 Adelaide on Monday, 28th November, at 8.00pm; and Channel 39 Dunedin in New Zealand on Tuesday, 22nd November ,at 9.00pm.

Sonnigsburg will air from November 14th at 8:30pm AEDT in Melbourne, and on Channel 44 in Adelaide at 10:00pm.
