Yes yes yes, The Odyssey burnt up the box office, almost pillaging $20k per screen, but its result got us thinking … How does the top 20 fare, bearing in mind the traditional formula of Australian box office equating to 10% of the North American box office? The Odyssey, Toy Story 5 and Obsession are all at around 10%. Tuner fares best at 22%, Leviticus at almost 20%, Moana, Minions & Monsters, Jackass: Best and Last with 15%, The Sheep Detectives at 14%, Michael at 12%, whilst the disappointments are Evil Dead Burn at under 7%, Backrooms at 7.5%, Supergirl at 8% and Disclosure Day at 8.5%. You could argue that Tuner and The Sheep Detectives appealed to the older audience that traditionally heads to the cinema in Australia and Leviticus is a local film boosted by a big marketing push in North America. Perhaps Backrooms‘ distributor A24 needed to have an actual operation in Australia, but the rest will remain the great mystery of the box office.
