The second best vampire movie of 1987* is coming to the small screen. Rob Thomas, creator of Veronica Mars and iZombie, is putting together a TV series re-imagining of The Lost Boys, Joel Schumacher’s much beloved teen vampire romp, for the CW.
Before the gnashing of teeth and accusations of ruined childhoods begins in earnest, let’s take a moment to assess the situation. Firstly, if the two Feldman-tastic direct-to-video cheapo sequels didn’t permanently besmirch the hallowed original, then nothing will. Secondly, Thomas seems to have come up with a cool wrinkle on the original conceit: it’ll be a kind of anthology series, spanning some 70 years over seven seasons, with the first taking place in San Francisco in 1967. The idea here is that the vampire characters will remain unchanged, while the humans around them age and die.
That also means that, yes, it’s possible for season to be set in 1987, with some young stud from the CW stable taking on Kiefer Sutherland’s peroxided mullet.
Apparently the CW knows there’s money in the undead, and The Lost Boys is poised to begin screening around the time the eighth and final season of The Vampire Diaries wraps up. Expect it some time in the back half of 2017.
