THE DEBUT FEATURE FILM BY JAMES J. ROBINSON IS THE COUNTRY’S FIRST TAGALOG-LANGUAGE SUBMISSION
Australia has selected James J Robinson’s acclaimed feature debut FIRST LIGHT as its official submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards (Oscars 2027).
The selection of the Filipino-Australian co-production, the first of its kind, marks a significant moment for both nations’ cinema, presenting a haunting exploration of spiritual doubt, institutional corruption and postcolonial trauma through the eyes of Sister Yolanda, a nun whose conviction is tested after a devastating incident in a remote Philippine mountain convent.
A jury presided by Charlotte Wells (AFTERSUN) awarded the film with the $50,000 Blackmagic Design Best Australian Director Award at the 2025 Melbourne International Film Festival. The film screened in main competition at the Marrakech International Film Festival last year, where it was nominated for the Étoile d’Or, before later screenings including International Film Festival Rotterdam, Shanghai International Film Festival, Glasgow Film Festival and New Zealand International Film Festival. The film was runner up for the GIO Audience Award for Best Australian Film at the 2026 Sydney Film Festival.
The film stars a number of veteran Filipino actors including lead Ruby Ruiz (EXPATS), ‘Diamond Star’ Maricel Soriano, Rez Cortez and National Artist Kidlat Tahimik. It was released in cinemas in the Philippines by Clou Media Productions on June 24, and in Australian cinemas by Bonsai Films on July 9.
FIRST LIGHT marks Australian-Filipino artist James J Robinson’s writing and directorial debut. Known for his editorial work for publications like The New York Times, Vogue and GQ, and campaigns for brands like Prada and Apple, the film represents a bold artistic shift into feature filmmaking that examines his cultural heritage and religious indoctrination.
Produced by Gabrielle Pearson of Majella Productions and Christelle Lou Dychangco and Jane Pe Aguirre of Clou Media Productions, FIRST LIGHT received principal production funding from Screen Australia in association with the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) Premiere Fund. Financed with support from the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) and VicScreen. International sales are handled by UK’s Independent Entertainment.
Executive producers include Nick Batzias and Virginia Whitwell of Good Thing Productions (NITRAM), Anthony Robinson, Ester Harding, Michael Agar, Cora Palfrey and Jordan Allwood.
During theatrical release in the Philippines, the production partnered with non-profit impact organisation Sustina to support conservation efforts at the Masungi Georeserve in Rizal, the same province where the film was primarily photographed.
Cinematographer Amy Dellar shot the film with a painterly and luminous visual language that has been universally acclaimed by critics and audiences, while Filipino-American ambient composer Ana Roxanne scores the film with a deeply evocative acoustic soundtrack.
The film is Australia’s eighteenth submission to the best international feature film category, following Warwick Thornton’s Warlpiri language film SAMSON AND DELILAH (2009), and Bentley Dean and Martin Butler’s TANNA (2016) which was ultimately nominated that year.
The selection committee said:“The Australian selection committee are proud to select FIRST LIGHT, a meditative work about an aging woman who questions her faith as her world begins to crumble around her, leaving an indelible mark. An impressive debut that is a shining example of Australian filmmaking.”
