Everyone seems to dig Wes Anderson, including cast members Benicio del Toro, Michael Cera, Riz Ahmed, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Mathieu Amalric, Richard Ayoade, Jeffrey Wright, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Rupert Friend, Hope Davis and Mia Threapleton (daughter of Kate Winslet), and co-writer Roman Coppola, but we’re not feeling it. It’s encouraging to think that a filmmaker can exist in today’s Hollywood system making idiosyncratic visions a la Fellini or an absurdist such as playwright Eugene Ionesco in their days, however, what does it all mean, and what is the subtext? We’re stumped. The production design looks good, though, as always.
