Tom Hanks must love him some David Eggers; not only did he star in Tom Tykwer’s uneven adaptation of the McSweeney’s founder’s novel, A Hologram for the King, here he is again playing the enigmatic antagonist of The Circle, a new thriller drawn from Eggers’ 2013 book of the same name.
Tom Hanks in bad guy made is a rare bird indeed, and who is it that has earned his ire? Well, the entire online world, it seems, but in particular Emma Watson’s tech ingenue, who seems to discover that the titular IT giant is more cult than company, with panopticon-level surveillance state ambitions to boot. Karen Gillan, Ellar Coltrane, Patton Oswalt and John Boyega co-star, while James Ponsoldt (The Spectacular Now, The End of the Tour) writes and directs.
The Circle is in Australian theatres from May 25, 2017.
