In our second character spotlight for Danny Boyle’s 20-years-on return to streets of Leith, Ewen Bremner’s tragicomic Spud gets a look-in.

Perhaps more than any other character, Spud is the beating heart of Trainspotting – never as cool as Renton or Sick Boy, not even remotely dangerous as Begbie, Spud’s the kid who wanted to hang out with the cool kids, a casualty of conformity in the drug culture. Judging from what we’ve got here, part of the new film will deal with Renton (Ewan McGregor) trying to get Spud off the junk – a project that, given the subject matter and tone we’re dealing with here, could go either way.

T2 Trainspotting slips into Australian cinemas on February 23.
