Polish People Are Always Complaining
This is one of the stereotypes that is partially true for Polish people, also known as Poles. Polish people love to complain a lot. You cannot blame them based on their painful history and a “bad” government.
The habit is said to date back to communist times. During that time, for a person to purchase sugar or toilet paper, they had to stand 12 hours in line only to be told that the commodities had been sold out for the day. Things have, however, changed nowadays, and it is not very common for Poles to complain. They have finally managed to become relaxed, happy and content for the most part.
Poles Are Catholic Zealots
While most Polish people are Catholic, they do not care for what the church says. A survey that was carried out in November 2011 revealed that 95% of Poles declare that they are Catholic, with 92% saying that they believe in God. About 40% of the population states that they attend mass every Sunday, while only 7% say that they are “strong believers”. As the years go by, the number of practicing Catholics continues to drop, while the number of atheists continues to rise.
It is not clear why many Poles declare themselves as Catholics. It may be because of tradition or conformism. A survey conducted in autumn 2011 reported that almost half of Polish people supported the right to abortion. A huge percentage of Poles also disagree with the church in regards to issues like divorce and contraception.
Poles Are Heavy Vodka Drinkers
Some people will not hesitate to say that pure vodka runs through the veins of Poles. While vodka is a key element in various settings, including weddings, family gatherings or as a nightcap, research shows that Poles drink average amounts of alcohol. Poles are ranked the 19th biggest drinkers in the world which goes to show that they do not drink too much. This is even though Polish people manufacture some of the best vodka on the planet. They do not just sit around, drink vodka and get wasted.
Poland Is Crime-Ridden
Saying that there is too much crime in Poland is a bit far-fetched. Statistics rank the country somewhere in the middle. Truth be told, there are fewer crimes and robberies in Poland than in other countries in Western Europe. Furthermore, many Chinese immigrants agree that it is better for them to reside in Poland. There is also no sure way of saying that one country is safer than the next. Poland is a great place to live in, and crimes and accidents happen in different countries.
Poland Is Like Russia
Most foreigners believe that Russia and Poland are generally the same culturally and territorially. While Poland is geographically situated in Eastern and Central Europe, culturally, the country is closer to the West. Just like in many places in the world, small villages and towns are less developed than the cities.
One of Poland’s Regions is Made of Coal
In line with the fact that many see Poland as a poor and old communist country with horses and carriages instead of cars, some people also believe that Silesia is made of coal. Silesia is a historical region that is mostly green and has a diverse population. A 1/3rd of the region is covered in forests, and the place is also developing fast. Rather than being associated with coal, the area is associated with interesting architecture, modern services and some of the best musical events in Poland. Silesia is, therefore, a civilization that is growing rapidly, and it is not just made of coal.
