The Very Short Film Festival (VSFF) celebrates Australian storytelling, championing diverse voices that reflect contemporary culture. Now in its 5th year, VSFF invites submissions for its 2025 official competition, offering new and emerging filmmakers a unique platform to captivate audiences across Australia. A launchpad for creative expression, VSFF gives storytellers the opportunity to produce impactful short films that inspire and engage audiences.

VSFF welcomes entries from Australian creators of all backgrounds. Committed to fostering inclusivity, the festival proudly waives entry fees to ensure equal opportunity for storytellers to showcase their talents. Films of any genre are welcome, with each submission required to be between two and five minutes and creatively incorporate the 2025 signature theme, “Seed.”

“I’m honoured to be an ambassador for VSFF,” said Justin Kurzel, award-winning Australian film director and VSFF ambassador. “This festival offers a vital space to share stories that reflect Australia’s depth, themes, and diversity. The short film format uniquely connects with audiences across the country, and I’m excited to see the VSFF continue to grow and reach more Australians.”

Filmmakers can enter in one of two categories: Junior (for school-aged participants 18 and under) or Open (for participants 19 and older). Finalists will enjoy mentoring opportunities with industry leaders, along with a trip that covers flights and accommodation from any part of Australia to the festival’s premiere screening and gala event, where their films will debut. This year, the festival extends its reach with a select tour across regional Australia, bringing these diverse stories to new audiences in key locations. Cash prizes will also be awarded to the winning filmmakers.
Very Short Film Festival Ambassadors and Jury feature a stellar lineup, including director Justin Kurzel, actor and writer Leah Purcell, actor and producer Marta Dusseldorp, and acclaimed actor Essie Davis.

Film submissions are open until April 1, 2025 at veryshortfilmfestival.com.au.
