SUKA, a feature-length production, begins principal photography in Sydney this week.
The Multicultural Australian cast is led by Jenny Wu (Australia Day) and Paul He (Shang Chi) together with Grace Huang (The Man with the Iron Fists), Ethan Browne (Home and Away) and Tsu Shan Chambers (Unsound).
Director is Heidi Lee Douglas (Devil Woman), Co-Writer is Lily Cheng (Huli Jing) and Chambers is co-writer and producer.
Described by Chambers as an “Asian-Australian Night In Paradise meets My Name and Black Mirror: Bandersnatch”, SUKA is a story of forbidden love, family intrigue and thrilling action sequences.
“Bold, racy and action-packed, SUKA is a multi-cultural Romeo and Juliet revenge tragedy about choices and consequences – it’s one of a kind to be led by an all-female team, developed and shot right here in Australia,” Chambers says.
The all-female creative team of genre lovers includes the only accredited female stunt coordinator in New South Wales, Jackie Murray.
US distributor and Sales Agent is Synergetic, with the film to feature on their Darkroom Streaming (darkroom.film) platform, with Creamsource acting as Executive Producers (Mark Naidoo), together with US Producer Franco Sama (Guns, Girls & Gambling). Mind the Gap Film Finance is also supporting the team.
SYNPOSIS:
Set in a Western Sydney location where crime gangs rule, SUKA is about the Yang clan’s thirst for power which continues to threaten the lives of many. The Dawood family is the only line of defense. Wasiya, the Dawood matriarch, stealthily forges alliances to quash the hold of the Yang family, which is led by their patriarch, Jun – who murdered her husband when she was heavily pregnant. Her only daughter, Hui, was sent away as a child for protection and is unaware of this generational feud. When Hui returns to Australia as an adult, she stays with her best friend, Jay, who is secretly in love with her. Bo, heir to the Yang family, has also grown up and – with his older sister Fandi – now carries out their father’s dirty business dealings. Unaware of each other’s family ties, Hui and Bo meet by chance and fall for each other. Bo, obligated by family duty and his father’s insistence, is forced to assassinate a local trader who has betrayed the Yang clan. Hui witnesses the assassination and is captured by Fandi. Bo is torn between honor and love when he discovers that his beloved Hui is the daughter of his father’s worst enemy. With Western Sydney on the brink of all-out gang warfare, will Bo carry out his family’s demands or choose the one person who makes him a better man.
