Presented by The Golden Age Cinema, in partnership with Playground Films, HELM is a unique program of monthly film screenings of Australian films, presented by their Australian directors.

An opportunity for filmmakers to reconnect with the creative community after years of isolation and introspection.

To inspire each other, to learn, and to hear how others have approached getting their vision onto the big and not so big screens.

—— FOR DIRECTORS / BY DIRECTORS

“The best films are best because of nobody but the director,” Roman Polanksi

Many would argue with Mr Polanksi that it’s actually a team game, where vision can only be met in the form of collaboration between many moving parts; that it takes many hearts and minds to create a film.

From small-scale indies to epic-tentpoles, filmmaking is an endeavour where the many make the few look like they’re some kind of god. This in itself creates a schism, of sorts.

How does the director maintain their creative vision when there’s a myriad of potential storms brewing that could unduly steer them off course? And why would someone want to put themselves at the centre of that type of chaos masquerading as control?

—— FILM PROGRAM

The HELM Winter Program features screenings and in-person conversations on the art of directing, with a diverse range of filmmakers; Jennifer Peedom & Jospeh Nizeti (River), Ben Lawrence (Hearts & Bones), Yolanda Ramke & Ben Howling (Cargo) & Matthew Saville (Noise).

More to be announced…

“The truth is that nobody knows what that magic combination is that produces a first-rate piece of work… all we can do is prepare the groundwork that allows for the lucky accidents that make a first rate movie happen,” Sydney Lumet

Is that the truth, or just one pragmatic perspective? Come find out, and stick around for drinks afterwards.
