Working across both film and television, Dr Fisher made his feature film debut writing, producing and directing Inbetweeners for Universal Pictures. His last film, Frequencies, received rave reviews with a television adaptation now in development with a major US network. In 2018 he was awarded the prestigious Greg Coote Scholarship by Australians in Film and Screen Queensland. Dr Fisher was awarded his PhD in 2020 for his thesis Film as Argument: Mainstream feature filmmaking as the social practice of incognizant argument design and delivery.
He’s already making waves in his new role at the University, garnering international support for the highly successful Bond University Film and Television Awards (BUFTA), with Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe recently expressing his support for the prestigious competition.
“I’m a very proud supporter of the Bond University Film and Television Department and BUFTA, Bond’s awards for young Australian filmmakers. As well as my stage work, I’ve worked in film and TV for most of my life and believe it’s the most enjoyable and brilliant career you can have”.
“It’s an exciting time for the film school here at Bond,” Mr Fisher said.
“BUFTA, which sees a young filmmaker receive a full scholarship to study at Bond University, continues to grow in popularity and prestige.
“Since its inception in 1996, BUFTA has established a national reputation as the best way for talented high school filmmakers to get noticed. There has also been such huge interest in the awards from overseas, that this year, for the first time, we’re adding an international category.
“BUFTA has been the starting point for so many of Bond’s film and television alumni, who are now enjoying fantastic careers in the industry. Previous nominees and winners have gone on to be nominated for Oscars and win major festival awards.
Further strengthening these types of key industry connections for Bond film students was one of his priorities as the University’s new head of the film school, Dr Fisher said.
“Bond is at the forefront of blurring the boundaries between education and industry. All our degrees are intensely practical, encouraging students to deeply immerse themselves in an experience both educational and creative.
“Our exclusive partnership with Screen Queensland, to bring creative professionals onto campus in our Creative Hub, gives students the chance to establish connections with industry on a daily basis, as well as through formal internships and work-experience initiatives.
“Our strong focus on real-world connections provides students with both the cutting-edge training and significant career opportunities necessary to graduate ready to make their mark on the industry.”
