A24 has broken all sorts of records with Backrooms, but what’s even more impressive is the result for Obsession, which has almost doubled its gross in Weekend 2 of release … a true anomaly. What’s even more impressive is that Obsession is released in Australia and New Zealand by indie Rialto, who were one of the few to board the film early (way before Focus Features acquired the film for North American release), and are reaping the rewards now.
To state the bleeding obvious, it looks like the kids are alright, cinema is well and truly alive, streaming hasn’t killed it, and hopefully 84 year old Peter Biskind is already hard at work writing a deep dive into this new generation of filmmakers who grew up creating content and building an audience on Youtube.
