It’s Cinema Nova’s birthday month and the Melbourne independent is pulling out all the stops to celebrate thirty years of movie-going. On Monday August 29, travel back to 1992 with early 90s discount day prices – that’s $5 movie tickets for every session, all day! Plus, the complete retro program for Cinema Nova’s 30th Birthday has just been announced with limited sessions on sale now.
Beginning as a twin arthouse venue in 1992, Cinema Nova has since expanded to a whopping sixteen screens, becoming the largest independent cinema in the Southern Hemisphere. Now, in 2022, Melbourne’s favourite independent is turning 30 and inviting Melbourne movie-lovers to celebrate. After kicking off the festivities with an invitation-only Twin Gala with industry partners on Wednesday August 24, Cinema Nova will run a curated retrospective of sixteen Cinema Nova favourites from August 25-31, with encores to follow. The program will celebrate three decades of movies, from Nova’s biggest box office hits and home-grown Australian classics to early Nova-exclusive titles and the very first film to ever screen at the Carlton venue: Ben Lewin’s THE FAVOUR, THE WATCH AND THE VERY BIG FISH.
First round tickets are on sale now, with remaining sessions set to go live on Wednesday August 24. See the full program and session times here.
From August 24, the iconic Melbourne venue will feature a Nova Nostalgia Gallery and Exhibition in the foyer, displaying three decades of Cinema Nova history. Then, on Monday August 29, Cinema Nova’s popular Discount Monday gets a 90s makeover! Current 2022 Monday ticket prices ($7 before 4pm, $10 after) will reduce to their original 1992 price of $5 all day, for one day only.
