NAVALNY has unprecedented access to the Russian opposition leader and his inner circle. With Alexei Navalny currently imprisoned in Russia and recently transferred to a maximum-security facility, this incredibly important film comes at a time when his future is uncertain and the world’s eyes are on Russia.

Enthralling and intimate, NAVALNY unfolds with the pace of a thriller as it follows Russian opposition leader, lawyer, and activist Alexei Navalny in his quest to identify the men who poisoned him in August 2020. Together with investigative journalist Christo Grozev of Bellingcat, he painstakingly assembles the identities of the would-be hit men and cracks the case open.

Shot in Germany as the story unfolded and offering extraordinary access to the investigation, NAVALNY is a fly-on-the-wall documentary that is also a study of Navalny the man – a portrait of a leader intent on reform who will not be cowed by anything, including his own poisoning. Scenes with Navalny’s wife and children, and with his colleagues offer a portrait of a masterful media strategist and a leader who is utterly committed to his homeland. As the documentary ends, and with authoritarianism rising across the globe, Russia’s would-be president returns to his country, ready to sacrifice himself to bring change.

Madman Entertainment will release NAVALNY on DocPlay from 29 August.
