“This festival was created to not only give a platform for emerging filmmakers but to be one of a kind that creates a happier humanity, whilst awarding prizes for Best Film, Best Female filmmaker & Best Diversity film. And just for its 10th anniversary, there’s an additional prize – Stephen Wong Photography’s Highly commended film. Our main sponsors include Haribo, Coles, Pepe Saya and Stephen Wong Photography and the Chinese Community Council of Australia. We’re proud to have given over $10 000 worth of prizes over the last decade and to support such talented filmmakers,” says its founder, Joy Hopwood.

The finalists this year include: Sophie Marsh & Efa Blosse Mason (Blooming), Laurie York (Flora of the Fields), Dan Sanguineti (The Way Sam sees it), Aidan Keogh (Goodgod small job), Eric Geissman & Piers Goffart (What Time is it), Radheya Jang Jegatheva (Bird Drome), Clare Chun (Shelter in Place), Kong (Tit for Tat) & Michael Raso (My Gift).

Our judges are Takaya Honda (Neighbours), HaiHa Le (Packed to the Rafters) & Lex Marinos (Mother & Son), who are also stars of Joy’s next feature film, The Gift That Gives.

There are a great range of feel good films selected this year, ranging from dramas, documentaries, comedic stop motion & animated films.

Many of Joy House Film Festival alumni have gone on to achieve international success including Jacob Fre and Marcus Kranzler whose critically acclaimed animated short, The Present led to careers at Pixar & Walt Disney Animation Studios respectively.

Joy Hopwood is a feature filmmaker herself, with four feature films in her portfolio all successfully distributed with major networks including Channel Nine, Prime, Hulu and Paramount Plus. “I know how hard it is for filmmakers, so the annual Joy House Film Festival is my way of giving back to the film industry’s community.”

“We are proud to be part of a festival that promotes joy and diversity,” said Melissa-Kate McCabe from Hoyts.
