Films have been nominated for, and winning Oscars for various categories for many decades now, and here are a few of the best that can be watched on the Netflix streaming service.
The Irishman
This film is quite the epic saga which depicts crime taking place in post-war America as told through the eyes of a World War II veteran. Starring Robert De Niro as that veteran, who also operates as a hustler and a hitman, the film spans several decades and focuses on the disappearance of legendary union boss Jimmy Hoffa, portrayed by Al Pacino.
While The Irishman may not have won in any of the nine categories that it was nominated in, Bet9ja was able to take various wagers on which film would win in the Best Picture category. Of course, some people wagered on The Irishman, but the award went to the aforementioned Parasite. The bookmaker takes bets on a multitude of other options as well, though.
The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
Everyone has heard of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and Return of the King (the third and final instalment) went on to win Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score and seven other Oscars in 2004. It was also nominated in the Best Sound Mixing category, but wasn’t able to capture the award for this one. It did secure its position as the first fantasy film to win Best Picture, though.
Schindler’s List
Steven Spielberg is one of the biggest film directors in the world, and that recognition has also come partially due to the Best Picture, Best Director and Best Film Editing Oscar awards won in 1994. Schindler’s List took home seven awards from the 66th Academy Awards, and rightly so. It tells the real-life story of Oskar Schindler, portrayed by Irish actor Liam Neeson, who was a German businessman that went on to save the lives of more than 1,000 Jews during the Holocaust.
The Silence of the Lambs
The Silence of the Lambs is one of those horror films that manages to really bring the central characters to life, thanks to portrayals from Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins. It went on to win Best Picture, Best Director (for Jonathan Demme), Best Actor (Hopkins), Best Actress (Foster) and Best Adapted Screenplay (for Ted Tally) awards in 1992.
Moonstruck
Prior to the screening of her first serious acting role in Silkwood in 1983, critics were out to hammer the casting of Cher in movies. Moonstruck, also starring Nicolas Cage, went on to win Best Original Screenplay, Best Actress (Cher) and Best Supporting Actress (Olympia Dukakis) awards in 1988. Moonstruck is a romantic comedy film, with the singer portraying an Italian-American widow who opts to marry her lame boyfriend, Johnny. However, she must first locate his estranged brother, portrayed by Cage, who is a one-handed baker with a passion for opera!
