In a pitch-perfect bit of voice casting wrestler John Cena lends his lungs to the titular character in Ferdinand, upcoming 3D animated effort from Blue Sky and Fox.

According to the official precis, “Ferdinand tells the story of a giant bull with a big heart. After being mistaken for a dangerous beast, he is captured and torn from his home. Determined to return to his family, he rallies a misfit team on the ultimate adventure. Set in Spain, Ferdinand proves you can’t judge a bull by its cover.  From Blue Sky Studios and Carlos Saldanha, the director of Rio and inspired by the beloved book The Story of Ferdinand by Munro Leaf and Robert Lawson, Ferdinand is a heartwarming animated comedy adventure.”

David Tennant, Anthony Anderson, Gabriel Iglesias, Kate McKinnon, Boris Kodjoe, Miguel Ángel Silvestre, Raúl Esparza, Jerrod Carmichael, Gina Rodriguez, Daveed Diggs, Bobby Cannavale, Sally Phillips, Flula Borg, and Karla Martínez co-star, which is an impressive list by any measure.’

If the story sounds familiar, it might be because Walt Disney adapted it as a short back in 1938, to such success that it won an Oscar.

Fox’s Ferdinand hits cinemas on Boxing Day, 2017. Hopefully it’s good – if not, we’ve got a lot of bull-related metaphors we’re not afraid to use.
