“I love a protagonist who is trying to find themselves,” Australian director, Garth Davis, told FilmInk in 2011, referring to the TV drama, Top Of The Lake, which he co-directed with Jane Campion. “I always find that really satisfying because we all try to do that.” Davis has obviously kept that thematic driver firing for his feature directorial debut, Lion. Based on the life of Saroo Brierly, as chronicled in his book, A Long Way Home, this powerful drama tells the story of an Indian-born adoptee (Dev Patel, from Slumdog Millionaire and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) who tracks down his birth parents using Google Earth. Nicole Kidman, David Wenham, and Rooney Mara also feature in the film, which was shot in Tasmania and India, and will have its premiere at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival.

Lion is in cinemas January 19, 2017
