Following the incredible success of their revamp of The Jungle Book, Disney have officially confirmed that Jon Favreau will be proceeding on a remake of The Lion King. The film will utilise the same photorealistic animation techniques that brought Bagheera, Baloo and company to life.
The Lion King is only the latest in Disney’s continuing program to remake its animated properties as live action (or in this case live-looking-action) films, with Maleficent and Cinderella already released, and Beauty and the Beast due out next year.
In a press release, Disney said “We can officially confirm that The Walt Disney Studios and director Jon Favreau are putting a new reimagining of The Lion King on the fast track to production. The project follows the technologically groundbreaking smash hit The Jungle Book, directed by Favreau, which debuted in April and has earned $965.8 million worldwide,”
Favreau, however, used social media to announce his involvement.
