Is it just us, having to analyse the box office results after every weekend, or is cinemagoing in this country a form of colonialism? Stay with us, please… How does One of them Days outperform Spit? Do we have a lot of American immigrants here in Australia? How does so-so Swedish documentary The Last Journey play on that many screens? No need to shout, we know the answers, but it doesn’t mean it’s right.

In brighter news, Sean Baker’s Oscar-conquering Anora has re-entered the top 20, in fact, in its highest spot yet, helped by the number of screens and a healthy screen average, and Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17 topped the charts, though we doubt whether its respectable take will justify Warner Bros.’ recent big gamble on filmmakers with ambition that require big budgets ((see Ryan Coogler’s Sinners on the horizon).

All in all, Mickey 17‘s Kenneth Marshall will be overjoyed with America’s domination of the Australian box office and cinemas.
