Well, if we can’t have Australian films on our big screens, we can have Australian stars in American films, right?

A24 have entered distribution in this country, with Babygirl, starring Australia’s own Nicole Kidman coming in at #2 behind Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown. We hear that A24 will continue releasing films in this country if they don’t achieve their desired price from local distributors. Should be interesting. What is more interesting, though, is that we have 2 original films atop the box office.

Other than that, the school holiday period is behind us, however, it hasn’t helped Oscars frontrunner Emilia Perez, which is virtually finished in cinemas, dropping 45% in week 3 of release. Did the online campaigns – Spanish speakers upset with Jacques Audiard’s treatment of the language and subject of the film; Karla Sofía Gascón‘s past comments online – hurt its chances of success? Meanwhile, Maria, starring Angelina Jolie, has stalled on release, after reasonable sneak weekend previews. Have people finally realised that Pablo Larrain makes obtuse films?
