The sequel to surprise 2022 hit Smile cheered up cinemas this weekend after the disappointment of the Joker sequel, while Terrifier 3 expanded by 40 screens and Adam Elliot’s much-anticipated Memoir of a Snail didn’t quite deliver on all of the gushy reviews and interviews. As one industry insider asked us – who’s the audience? One release certainly knew its audience – CatVideoFest 2024, which purred to a strong cumulative result on very limited sessions in wide release. On the flipside, no idea how AFL Indigenous themed doco Like My Brother was screening multiple times per day on wide release, but the result certainly reflects this with a paltry $232 screen average.
