We did not see this one coming. Beloved comedian and generally weird cultural presence Bill Murray has teamed up with acclaimed cellist Jan Vogel for the New Worlds tour. The pair, along with violinist Mira Wang and pianist Vanessa Perez, will celebrate what they’re calling “the core of the American values in literature and music” – think Twain, Hemingway, Whitman, Cooper, Bernstein, Gershwin and Foster – in a night of musical performance and spoken word recitals.
Murray says the idea stems from “…the collision of America and Europe,” in part reflected in the backgrounds of each of the four members of his new group. “We are from four different continents, and when the continents come together, the music moves right across the peninsulas from one to the other. It’s just a short journey from one continent to the other.”
This is certainly something different from old Bill, which is to say it’s the sort of capricious, cultured whimsy we’ve come to expect from the perennial joker – no doubt it’ll be a night to remember – expect tickets to go fast.
