Rising Australian screenwriter Elliott Giarola has won the Drama Category in the highly competitive 2025 Final Draft Big Break Screenwriting Contest for his feature film BREAKER, an emotionally charged story set against the high-pressure backdrop of men’s professional tennis.
This year’s contest drew more than 12,000 submissions worldwide, making BREAKER’s win one of the standout achievements of the competition’s 24-year history.
At the centre of BREAKER are two professional tennis rivals, Max, a driven Australian player buckling under the weight of expectation, and Obi, a charismatic American star adored by fans. Their fierce on-court rivalry transforms into a secret, forbidden romance that challenges both men to confront their deepest fears and desires.
Spanning the courts of the Australian Open to the Wimbledon Championships, BREAKER explores identity, masculinity, and the cost of authenticity in a sport, and a world, built on appearances.
“BREAKER has always been about finding the courage to live truthfully,” said Giarola. “To see that message resonate with such an esteemed panel and audience is incredible. I’m deeply honoured and grateful.”
The screenplay, which scored 8/10 on The Black List (Top 4%), has already sparked early industry interest. Yolandi Franken (Streets of Colour, Carmen & Bolude) is attached as producer, and together she and Giarola are seeking a production partner to bring the film’s intensity and emotional depth to the screen.
“Elliott’s storytelling is raw, tender, and cinematic,” said Franken. “This award is not just recognition of his talent, but a reminder that audiences everywhere are craving honest stories about love, identity, and courage.”
As part of his Big Break recognition, Giarola will receive career mentorship, introductions to leading producers and managers, and international exposure through Final Draft’s global industry network, firmly establishing BREAKER as one of the most exciting new Australian screenplays of the year.
