It’s December, so anyone who pays attention to film news on the reg is going to be inundated with articles about The Most Anticipated Films of 2017. They come in at about a 50/50 ratio with Best Films of 2016 lists – heck, we even did a couple.
But really, the dirty little secret is that we’re just making educated guesses, based on our own interests and what we hope is an informed understanding of the film culture landscape. We’re pretty sure we’re on the money, but we don’t have any hard data to back us up on that.
Or do we?
Enter business intelligence company, Meltwater, who analysed the number of social media conversations happening across the net about our chosen movies, crunched ’em, and turned around this handy infographic:

Interesting stuff.
So, as can plainly be seen, the big money is in web-slinging teenagers, grizzled berserkers and lightsabers, with Spider-Man: Homecoming, Logan and Star Wars: Episode VIII all taking a big chunk of people’s mental runtime. Surprisingly, Assassins’ Creed is up there, too – could we have finally found the fabled Video Game Adaptation Which Is Not Terrible? Technically, Assassin’s Creed is generating more chatter than Star Wars, but don’t expect that to translate to bums on seats – especially if director, Justin Kurzel, and co. don’t knock it right out of the park.
The bottom end of the rankings has something to make everyone sad, though – is no one really talking about Blade Runner 2049? Could be worse, though – the numbers for The Mummy are positively woeful. Universal can’t be too happy about that. And poor, poor Kong: Skull Island – come on, that movie looks amazing!
What do you think? Does this map onto your movie conversations about the coming year? Or is it all a bit pie in the sky?
