In his third turn as globetrotting symbologist/adventurer Robert Langdon, Tom Hanks has to match wits with Ben Foster’s transhumanist nutter, who plans to wipe out most of the world’s population with an engineered virus – the “inferno” of the title. The problem is that our hero is suffering from the oh-so-cinematic problem of amnesia, and so his normally agile mind and impressive stock of liberal arts trivia will do him no good this time around.
Hanks and director Ron Howard have this stuff down to a science now, and their ability to mine passable thrills from Dan Brown’s unreadable novels is commendable. If this particular brand of tweedy mystery has sated you in the past, there’s no reason to believe it won’t again. Felicity Jones and Omar Sy are also on hand.
Inferno hits Australian cinemas on October 13.
