The Sapphires was one of the surprise local hits of 2012 and now the feel-good feature is being turned into an animated mini-series, produced by Goalpost Pictures (also behind the film) and Australian kids and comedy production powerhouse, Sticky Pictures.
Developed with broadcaster ABC TV as a 26 x 22 minute series aimed at a family audience, the series follows Aboriginal teenagers Gail, Cynthia, Julie and Kay on their musical misadventures in a fictional rural Australian town.
The feature film was directed by Wayne Blair and starred Jessica Mauboy, Deborah Mailman and newcomers, Miranda Tapsell and Shari Sebbens, and also a scene-stealing Chris O’Dowd. The film was penned by Tony Briggs and Keith Thompson, and the co-writers have also penned the animated series.
The film followed The Sapphires on an epic trip to entertain the US troops in Vietnam, but the animated series promises “contemporary storylines” and “fresh soulful music”.
The series in in the final stages of development.
