We were going to get a remake of Suspiria sooner or later. Dario Argento’s surreal 1977 horror classic is kind of perfect for it, having a strong reputation and a certain name brand recognition, but not being so prominent as to provoke a tsunami of puerile outrage from purists (not that that’s stopped anyone before).

Luca Guadagnino, director of A Bigger Splash, is getting further along than anyone has previously, to the point where he’s assembled a cast and we’d all be best served by moving straight to Stage 5 (acceptance) already. Still, it’s a very good cast, with Chloe Grace Moretz and Tilda Swinton having just been announced as joining Dakota Johnson and the wonderfully named Mia Goth in the tale of a young ballet dancer who joins an elite but remote dance academy only to discover horrifying supernatural goings-on (a coven of bloodthirsty witches in the original).

Production is due to begin in Hungary and Italy later this month, so expect Suspiria in, say, the second quarter of 2017.
