Studiocanal Announces Development Fund for Australian and New Zealand Films

March 16, 2017
The European studio wants to bring our stories to the world.

Studiocanal Australia is throwing a significant amount of money at the Australasian film industry with the announcement that they are inaugurating the Studiocanal Cultivator Fund, a financial source designed to encourage the development of local stories by local film practitioners.

The fund’s remit is to encourage “…the development and production of unique Australian and New Zealander stories which will resonate locally and transcend to international markets. The new fund fortifies Studiocanal’s already significant place in the local market by bolstering the local film industry, developing local talent and creating stories for broad audiences. Its major focus is script development and the production of screen content across feature film and TV.”

As a European company, Studiocanal is also well positioned to help fund beneficiaries tap into overseas markets – something that many local productions have traditionally had difficulty achieving.

Studiocanal Australia and New Zealand CEO Elizabeth Trotman said, “We are thrilled to announce this investment to start fostering the fantastic talent in Australia and New Zealand. We want to identify, cultivate and create incredible stories for local and international audiences alike. We are already developing a family film, two biopics, a prestige drama and a romantic comedy. A key focus for us is to include stories by and for women, taking important steps towards gender equality and female representation in the industry.”

However, the fund is subject to a formal submission process, by invitation only – no unsolicited scripts or projects will be considered.

Submissions of a logline and 300-word summary will be open via invitation through development@studiocanal.com.au. Submissions must be entered by a producer with at least one feature credit and at least one producer must be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia or New Zealand.
