Deadline reports that The Post will see Steven Spielberg directing old mate Tom Hanks and – unbelievably, for the first time ever – Meryl Streep in the story of how The Washington Post helped expose the Pentagon Papers back in ’71.

Hanks will most likely be playing editor Ben Bradlee, who was famously portrayed by Jason Robards in All the President’s Men (interestingly, John Slattery played Ben Bradlee Junior in Spotlight a couple years back). Streep is almost certainly earmarked for the role of publisher Kay Graham.

The Pentagon Papers, if you’re not down with your Cold War History, is a Department of Defense summary of American involvement in Vietnam from the end of World War II to 1967. The Post’s revelations regarding the papers revealed to the American public the scale of the US’s military actions, including the bombing of neighbouring Laos and Cambodia, and contributed directly to turning public opinion against the war. It’s juicy stuff.

The Post will be based on a spec script by Liz Hannah. When it will go into production is up in the air, but given Spielberg’s other commitments, probably sooner rather than later would be our guess.
