One of the ’68 Mustangs driven by Steve McQueen in the immortal action classic, Bullitt, has resurfaced, having been found in a Mexican junkyard.

Fox is reporting that a man named Hugo Chavez found the car, then painted white, last year, and acquired it with an aim to transforming it into a replica of a vehicle featured in Gone in 60 Seconds. However, a search of the car’s Vehicle Identification Number turned up its cinematic history, and good taste seems to have prevailed.

The car’s provenance was confirmed by classic car expert Kevin Marti – it’s the main stunt vehicle used for the movie. The other Bullitt Mustang is privately owned and hasn’t been publicly exhibited in over 25 years.

Chavez and his friend, custom shop owner Ralph Garcia, Jr., are planning a full restoration of the car, just in time for Bullitt‘s 50th anniversary next year.
