Star Trek Beyond isn’t even out yet, but Paramount, Skydance and Bad Robot are so confident that they’ve already announced that a fourth installment in the reboot series is in the cards. What’s more, it’ll see the return of Chris Hemsworth’s George Kirk, father to James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and unfortunate casualty of nuTrek’s alternate timeline.

This is interesting stuff, although it does make the Star Trek universe seem smaller (not every adventure needs personal stakes, guys). The go-to explanation theory for Kirk Senior’s return seems to be time travel, and there’s certainly form for that in Trek – after all, the whole Abramsverse is a result of a time travel mishap – but we shouldn’t be afraid to dream a little bigger. There are other possibilities like, oh, the Mirror Universe?

Seriously, how cool would that be? Everyone in goatees and leather?

In the meantime, Star Trek Beyond is in cinemas on July 22, 2016, and our review is already up here.
