The WWII French Resistance vibe is strong in the latest Rogue One trailer. This is not a film about inherited power, destiny and cool glowing laser swords – it’s about small people doing courageous and terrible things in the service of a larger cause. You know this one is going to have a high body count – a lot of these heroes aren’t coming home.

On a more upbeat note, it looks beautiful. Director Gareth Edwards has an eye to envy. It’s getting boring talking about his sense of scale – it’s been a discussion point ever since Monsters – but Jiminy, just look at that shot of the Death Star on the horizon, and that AT-AT foot crashing down.

Other things to be happy about: Darth Vader and Ben Mendelsohn sharing the screen, some revelations about Mads Mikkelsen’s character, and Forest Whitaker’s feet. Things that give us pause: Felicity Jones’ attempts at inspirational speaking. Hopefully that’ll be better in context.

December 15, team. Lock S-foils in attack position.
