…easily the best scifi show on the telly…

2020 has been an epic dumpster fire of egregious proportions. It has, at times, felt like a bad Stephen King story where some dipstick wished on a cursed monkey paw or some such bullshit and doomed the rest of us to a hellish year of fire, flood, pandemic, doom wasps, herpes gibbons and whatever’s going on in America at the moment. It has been, as the kids say, a mood.

Still, at least we get a new season of The Expanse to finish strong.

Season 5 of The Expanse follows the epic previous ten eps that were set on planet Ilus, and provided The Expanse’s best season thus far. In the fallout from those events (that you should absolutely catch up with on Amazon Prime Video), James Holden (Steven Strait), Amos Burton (Wes Chatham), Naomi Nagata (Dominique Tipper) and Alex Kamal (Cas Anvar) are faced with a brand new threat of a decidedly more homo sapien nature.

This time around it’s Belter terrorists who bring the pain, and the result of an attack shown in the first three episodes is absolutely going to change the state of The Expanse and the future of the human race.

Interestingly, the cast split up much more this season than usual, showcasing individual backstories and the strengths of each specific actor. Series MVP Wes Chatham has a particularly intriguing journey that will take him to Earth, and into his own history, whereas Steve Strait’s narrative is much more about the future of humankind. However, the best yarn here is undoubtedly that of Dominique Tipper, who has to face some bad decisions she made while young, in a visceral and often shocking fashion.

If it sounds like we’re skating around plot spoilers, that’s because we are. The Expanse Season 5 features events of seismic importance that will inform and impact its next (and final!) season in big ways. And being that The Expanse is easily the best scifi show on the telly, right now, you should probably cancel your plans and get ready to drink in the first three eps starting December 16.
