Warrioress spotlights the awe-inspiring journeys of martial arts luminaries Laura Bui, Bianca Elmir, Kristina Mah, Anne Pang, Cynthia Rothrock, Shantelle Thompson, Rupinder Sandhu, Linda Ung, and Yeye Zhou. This documentary features Cynthia Rothrock, known as the ‘Queen of Martial Arts Movies,’ having starred in over 50 action-packed films of the ’80s and ’90s.
Rothrock’s exceptional martial arts skills and her portrayal of strong, skilled female protagonists have made her an iconic figure in the genre. Through a series of candid interviews, these trailblazing women share their profound stories as martial artists and champions of women’s rights. Their narratives intertwine to reveal the transformative influence of this ancient practice across recent history.
Commissioned by the Art Gallery of NSW and directed by Maria Tran, a diverse actor, director, and cultural practitioner, Warrioress serves as a platform for these extraordinary individuals to reflect on their roles as both athletes and advocates. Tran’s unique directorial approach ensures that the documentary unveils the resilience, determination, and empowerment that emanate from their martial arts journeys. The film not only celebrates their individual achievements but also sheds light on the broader impact of martial arts as a vehicle for personal growth and societal change.
“Phoenix Eye Films is dedicated to telling impactful stories, and Warrioress continues our commitment to highlighting underrepresented voices,” says Therese Chen, Creative Producer at Phoenix Eye Films. “Maria Tran’s leadership in this project exemplifies the strength of human spirit and its capacity to inspire.”
Warrioress promises an enlightening and invigorating exploration of the interplay between martial arts, personal transformation, and gender advocacy. Under Maria Tran’s direction, the documentary captures the essence of resilience, determination, and the enduring spirit of the human endeavor.
