Christopher Nolan’s critically acclaimed new historical epic Oppenheimer which is showing in 70mm, broke the record for the highest grossing opening for a film ever at The Orpheum.

Additionally, Greta Gerwig’s equally acclaimed feel-good girl power romp Barbie also broke records to become the 2nd best opening for a film at the heritage listed site.

“To say we are absolutely blown away by the trading results of this weekend would be a major understatement. The Orpheum team and I are truly humbled and grateful to see so many movie lovers enthusiastically embrace both of these very different but equally excellent films.

“The unprecedented demand for tickets and the high number of sell-out sessions reaffirms without a shadow of doubt the power of the cinematic experience. There is simply no better way to watch movies, than on a giant screen with a packed crowd and a big bucket of popcorn.

“The communal experience of watching a movie is a truly unique shared experience that simply cannot be done justice at home. There is a reason cinema has outlasted countless trends and disruptions, including a pandemic and we are just so thrilled to be part of such a historic moment and to share this with so many of our wonderful patrons who still believe in the magic of cinema.” – Alex Temesvari, General Manager – Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace.
