The powerful new Australian short film For My Mother will celebrate its World Premiere at the Catalina Film Festival in California this September.
Produced by Attic Films in association with Sugarland Productions, For My Mother is a moving exploration of the fragile complexities within a parent-child relationship.
Synopsis: On the way to a school recital, a mother and son get into a volatile argument that unveils the vast space between them.
Starring acclaimed Australian actor Jane Hall (Wentworth, Neighbours, Apples Never Fall, Bluey) and rising star Darcy Bryce (Hacksaw Ridge, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga), the film is written and directed by Marc Vecchio, whose vision brings a sharp intimacy and emotional weight to the story.
“The purpose of this film is to explore a deeply personal and complex mother-son relationship in which both parties love each other in certain ways, but struggle to understand one another. Their love is conditional and perfectionistic, highlighting the unrealistic nature of such expectations.” said writer-director Marc Vecchio. “We wanted to portray two flawed characters that reflect how easily dysfunction can be perpetuated.”
The project was produced by Vessela Karadjova, Marc Vecchio, and Riley Sugars, with Brock Dunstan serving as executive producer. Behind the camera, Jesse Lane leads as Director of Photography.
“We are thrilled to premiere For My Mother on the world stage at Catalina,” said producer Vessela Karadjova and Riley Sugars. “This film is a testament to the extraordinary talent of the cast and crew, and we can’t wait to share it with audiences both in the U.S. and back home in Australia.”
The Catalina Film Festival, known for spotlighting bold and innovative storytelling, will run in-person from September 25–28, 2024, with a virtual program September 24–30, 2024. For more information about the festival, click here.
