Frame Documentary, in partnership with Creative Victoria, the State Library Victoria and VicScreen, today announced the launch of the inaugural Frame Doc Lab and Frame Doc Talks programs, to take place on Wurundjeri land in Melbourne across the first half of 2023.

Australia’s first-ever annual acceleration programme for non-fiction creators working at the intersection of art and technology, Frame Documentary is running a public and industry program to promote new and existing work and talent within the immersive media space.

The four teams selected for the exclusive Frame Doc Lab program are Emma Roberts and Ben Joseph Andrews, Van Sowerwine and Isobel Knowles, Ana Tiquia and Reanna Browne and Tony Briggs and David Pledger. Each team will receive $15,000 of development funding, a dedicated lab program and complimentary desks at the State Library Victoria’s newly launched Startspace.

A free public-facing program of talks has also been announced in partnership with StartSpace powered by State Library Victoria, with the first talk addressing the topic, “Can Technology Make Us Human?” The talk includes Canadian Creative Producer, David Oppenheim and award-winning Berlin-based artist/journalist, Karim Ben Khelifa, who will discuss their work and how technology is informing the stories we tell about our place in the world. Both creators will also be participating in the Frame Doc Lab, with Oppenheim’s participation supported by the Consulate General of Canada.

CEO of State Library Victoria, Paul Duldig, said the program is a natural fit for the Library’s StartSpace. “At the heart of every documentary is a great story told well. At State Library Victoria we want to help documentary makers to elevate their story telling through increasingly creative uses of technology. Our partnership with Frame is a natural fit as we are a place that nurtures creators – especially in StartSpace, which exists to support early-stage new business founders.”

He continues, “We are delighted to partner with Frame on this initiative which will support and inspire new work and help Victoria’s documentary ecosystem be vibrant and sustainable.”

CEO of VicScreen, Caroline Pitcher said, “We are proud to partner with Frame Documentary to deliver the first development lab of its kind in Australia. Globally, Victoria is making its mark as a go-to destination for ambitious screen technology, and VicScreen is committed to giving emerging practitioners the experience they need to have successful careers in the industry. We can’t wait to see how our talented creators bring their immersive stories to life”.
