The Story of Australia’s Pioneering Film Studio, Streaming Nationwide This November
LIMELIGHT is available for streaming from 19 November 2025 on digital platforms including Apple TV, Google Play, Amazon Prime, and Wonder.
This remarkable documentary tells the story of the Limelight Department, a groundbreaking film studio run by the Salvation Army from a modest attic in Melbourne.
As one of the world’s first film studios, it pioneered innovative cinematic techniques and produced hundreds of films, bringing to life a forgotten chapter of Australian and global cinema history on screens across the nation.
Before Hollywood’s rise, Melbourne’s Limelight Department led a revolution in film, faith, and storytelling. Founded in 1891 by visionary Captain Joseph Perry, then just 28 years old, alongside Commandant Herbert Booth, the department produced over 400 groundbreaking films and documentaries, including The Federation of Australia and the Boer War troop departures, as well as one of the earliest narrative dramas, Soldiers of the Cross.
This innovative team pioneered multimedia presentations blending hand-coloured magic lantern slides, live music, narration, and early film. LIMELIGHT uses restored 4K archival footage with original sound design and music to revive this extraordinary chapter of Australia’s role in global cinema history.
Melbourne’s unique heritage as a birthplace of cinematic innovation shines through as LIMELIGHT captures the visionary spirit of creativity, faith, and community engagement. The film resonates with audiences today as a celebration of how early faith-based media shaped storytelling beyond church walls and influenced the film industry.
Available On Digital from 19 November, 2025.
