Calling Young Australians to Raise Awareness About Organ and Tissue Donation – $5,000 Prize for Winning Entry
The NSW Organ and Tissue Donation Service, in collaboration with Flickerfest, is excited to launch Lights, Camera, Donate!, a short film competition inviting young Australian filmmakers aged 18 to 35 to create films that inspire conversations about organ and tissue donation.
Only 10% of Australians aged 16 to 25 are registered as organ and tissue donors, so this competition aims to get young people thinking, talking, and acting on their choice to register as donors and bridge the gap between attitude and action. Whether you’re shooting on a smartphone or using professional equipment, we’re looking for entries from filmmakers of all levels. The winner will receive a $5,000 prize, and the winning film will be screened at Flickerfest.
A Filmmaker’s Story: Brooke Huskes’ Journey
Past winner of FilmLife, Brooke Huskes, a kidney transplant recipient, shared her experience through her creative film. “For me, it was about giving back,” she said of her decision to enter the competition with a Gotye parody video.
Brooke highlighted the incredible reach her film achieved. “I was on ABC and SBS news—it was wild! Waking up to see my video had 10,000 views was surreal.”
Her advice for future filmmakers? “Have fun with it! Do what you love and let your creativity flow. That’s when the magic happens.”
Message from Competition Director Lachlan Salavestro
Competition director Lachlan Salavestro is excited to see how this year’s filmmakers take on the challenge: “Film is a unique art form that can drive positive change and spark conversations. This competition has the potential to inspire young people to take action and talk to their families about organ and tissue donation.”
Lachlan adds, “I’m looking forward to seeing some original and creative films this year—contest restrictions always push filmmakers to think outside the box!”
