Melbourne’s newest, silliest web series is about to hit the internet, this Sunday 14th July.
It’s a low (zero) budget ode to friendship, and a testament to creativity in the face of a bleak economy.
How We Met Your Dave is a comedy web series about best friends Jesse (JESSE RICHARDS) and Liam (LIAM NGUYEN) who have come to a terrible realisation: they don’t have any other friends. The series follows their misguided and increasingly unhinged attempts to make some more.
The series will be dropping on Available For Download’s brand new YouTube Channel from 14th – 18th July, one ep per day.
How We Met Your Dave is a collaboration between exciting new comedy group Available For Download (Jesse Richards, Liam Nguyen and Greta Nash) and up-and-coming production company GGG Films (Greta Nash, Gabrielle McLeod and Gillian Crosby). While everyone involved in making this web series is a film industry professional, this series took the team back to their roots of making funny stuff with their friends. With a handful of friends willing to commit to the bit, a borrowed camera, and a cool budget of $0, one sugar-fuelled weekend was spent creating 5 x 6 min episodes of a frenetic, absurd, and downright cooked web series that celebrates friendship, both on- and off-screen.
GGG Films have produced a range of award-winning short films, most notably 2018 Tropfest-winner Two Piece. Available for Download have been making online sketch comedy since lockdown, and had a mega viral sketch about hot chips that ignited cultural warfare about whether they should be called “chips” or “fries”.
The roots of friendship run deep within the creative team: Gabby and Gilly went to high school together in Hobart, Liam and Greta went to high school together in Melbourne, Greta and Gilly studied filmmaking with Jesse at VCA (class of ‘15), and Jesse and Liam are arch nemeses linked by a blood feud that spans generations.
Each episode of the series sees Jesse and Liam try a new method for making friends: finding some dinner companions from that cool new app “Tumble”; inviting their colleagues over from M’Bizcuit (a drive thru biscuit franchise); hosting a boys night for their touch cricket team; and eventually getting pretty desperate and listing their dining table on Facebook Marketplace.
QUOTES (all stolen from the GGG x A4D group chat): “Tell me why I’m sitting here laughing at every joke like I haven’t seen it 100 times before” – Greta Nash, writer/director
“In case you were wondering what the lack of streamer quotas means for Australian content… this is it” – Gillian Crosby, producer
“We have really generous friends and we thought it would be fun to see how far we could push them before they said no. In the words of Lindsay Lohan – the limit does not exist.” – Gabrielle McLeod, producer
“WE FOOKIN DID IT.” – Jesse Richards, writer/performer/editor
“[Jesse] really went buck wild with [the edit] and it shows” – Liam Nguyen, writer/performer
“Making creative projects with no money is really hard, we hope to never have to do it again.” – the whole team
