Led by Worimi woman and GARUWA co-creator, Genevieve Grieves and producer Laurrie Brannigan-Onato, the 4-day participatory lab will be held from the 3rd to the 6th of October immersed in the sights, smells, textures and sounds of Kangaroo Valley on Wodi
Wodi Country.
The aim of the lab is to increase and expand the participation of First Nations creatives and movement organisers working at the intersection of documentary storytelling and impact campaigns. Over the 4 days, 8 selected participants from across Australia and ranging from emerging to advanced will share ideas and resources, be immersed in best practice methodologies through a range of case studies, and explore effective strategies for using independent documentary film as a tool for social or environmental change.
Applications are now open, with a submission deadline of 4th of August 2023. Apply now.
There are no fees to apply or participate.
The First Nations Impact Lab will channel the campaigning expertise of Doc Society who are dedicated to supporting stories that reach strategic audiences with compelling content to accelerate change, GARUWA’s expertise in training and mentoring of First Peoples creatives, excellence in collaborative storytelling, and its practice of decolonising methodologies and the natural surrounds of Shark Island’s Kangaroo Valley retreat space will combine to make an inspiring experience for participants.
To participate in the lab, participants will have an active project they are working on whether that is a creatively and socially ambitious documentary, a podcast, VR or mixed media projects or a social and/or environmental campaign and movement that is searching for a creative way to activate audiences. Projects can be at any stage.
“We love working with Doc Society. They are supporting change makers across the globe to make ground-breaking work that exposes, shifts and transforms our world. It’s exciting to be bringing these resources and knowledge base to First Nations creatives here in Australia. We have so many incredible change makers in the screen industry and in communities across the country doing incredible work. This Lab will extend their knowledge of how to utilise screen-based storytelling to make an impact both here and globally. ” said Genevieve Grieves, Creative Director of GARUWA.
