It’s exactly one month today until International Women’s Day, on Tuesday March 8 2022.
In marking this important event, UK based Exhibition on Screen have announced an encore Australian release of their stunning art film, Frida Kahlo.
Filmed extensively on location in Mexico City, including at Kahlo’s home ‘The Blue House’, this personal and intimate documentary, from Exhibition on Screen’s world-leading team of art film specialists, offers a unique journey into the life and art of one of the most celebrated and influential female artists of the past century.
Revered in her home country for her attention to Mexican and indigenous culture, and by feminists around the globe for her depiction of the female experience and form; Kahlo is best known for her uncompromising self-portraits, which laid bare both her pain and her passion.
Having suffered polio as a child, Kahlo almost died in a bus accident in her teens, suffering multiple injuries to her spine, shoulder, collarbone, ribs, pelvis and legs. Although she lived a full life, these injuries and related complications permeated Kahlo’s her 47 years, during which she endured 30 operations.
Of her 143 paintings, 55 are self-portraits.
With privileged access to Kahlo’s works and to personal letters highlighting the source of her resilience, feverish creativity, and unmatched lust for politics, life and love; this 90-minute film delves deeply into the artist’s most private archives, allowing audiences to discover the real Frida Kahlo for the first time.
Directed by British filmmaker Ali Ray, in close collaboration with Producer and Exhibition on Screen Founder, Phil Grabsky, Frida Kahlo is at once a unique window into the artist’s world, and a celebration of her life and incredible legacy.
With the 2020 Australian premiere season of Frida Kahlo all but wiped out due to Covid restrictions, Exhibition on Screen are thrilled to bring the film back to Australian cinema for the attention it deserves.
Frida Kahlo opens at cinemas across Australia on Tuesday March 8, 2022. Please see a list of confirmed screenings attached, current at 7 February 2022. For the most up to date information, find your nearest screening at exhibitiononscreen.com/find-a-screening/
