After the anni horribiles that were 2020 and 2021, 2022 has been a big return to form for cinema. To celebrate ACMI’s screening the best films of 2022, spanning features, documentary and animation from Australia and around the world. Program highlights include Ruben Östlund’s Triangle of Sadness (2022), Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s Memoria (2021) and Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths (2022).

From sun-dappled picnics to summer solstices to surf, cool off in our cinemas as ACMI celebrates the hottest season of the year on screen. Program highlights include Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing (1989), Olivia Newton-John in Xanadu (1980) and Peter Weir’s Australian classic Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975).

Keep the kids entertained and engaged this summer with a selection of family films that make them think and feel. Take the lessons learned from each film home after each screening with activities and talking points emailed to parents/guardians to help kids exercise their emotional intelligence. Program highlights include Komaneko: The Curious Cat (2009), Steven Spielberg’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) and a selection of episodes from Astro Boy (1980).
How I See It – Film Program

A celebration of films that exist in-between, that question the notions of place and national identity. These films reflect on the historical representations of First Nations peoples and communities surviving colonialism. Program highlights include Djibril Diop Mambéty’s Touki Bouki (1973), Khavn De la Cruz’s Balangiga: Howling Wilderness (2017) and Karrabing Film Collective’s Night Time Go (2017). Curated by Jenna Rain Warwick (Luritja) to coincide with the exhibition How I See It: Blak Art and Film.

ACMI’s year-round program Matinees & Soirees features an eclectic line-up of character-driven narrative dramas and comedies, fascinating documentaries, classics and digital restorations. Highlights include a 2022 reissue of Cabaret (1972), Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr in An Affair to Remember (1957) and the Australian flick Little Tornadoes (2022).

Not-So-Silent Cinema

Pull up a deckchair and join Fed Square and ACMI as they celebrate the early days of cinema with this free program of silent films paired with newly composed and restaged live scores. The program features silent shorts – Cops (1922) and La voyage dans la lune (1902) – with a live score by Phillip Johnston; Vampyr (1932), featuring a live score by Chiara Kickdrum; and A Page of Madness (1926) with a live score by Marcus Whale and Jacques Emery.
